development of visual user interfaces and working prototypes

A high goal in developing new interfaces is, to make the design logical and understandable for the consumer. The ease of use is (at least) as important as the looks.
A more or less functional prototype of a new software based device is during the process not just vital to make the right decisions but also a very good tool for usability tests with the target group and later for training.

Working alongside with graphic designers and engineers is enjoyable and enables me to shape a part of future things, which simplify some everyday tasks.

For example:

interface for a x-ray interface for busdrivers
interface of an x-ray system for
swissray (2006)
 interface for Siemens
 orientation and communication system
 for bus drivers (2005)

Both works I did at quadesign partner ag.

Update: The interface for Siemens was shown in the swiss TV science magazine «Einstein» from 28.06.2007. -> Here is the RealPlayer video (in German/Swiss German).

programming for visualisation

Programming is often an effective way to not only simulate but also visualise complex processes.
This can be used in exhibitions or just for business presentations.

As an example:

«das visuelle gedächtnis» is an interactive attempt of Claudius Fischer and me to show the visual memory of a human being. There for Claudius chouse the analogy of an universe in which each thought or segment of the memory is represented by a picture and a one word expression.
During brainstorming and discussions we came up with the idea, that each object (thought) is floating on the screen and growing if the user is pointing at it – if clicked the thoughts content will be exhibited to the user.

Each object can be rated in seven different categories. The less the objects are differing from each other the more they are attracted while floating. This means that the thoughts are organizing themselves in topic related groups. which makes it more easy to navigate through them.
The user has also the possibility to change the view from image to text.

art

In my opinion creating interactive art installations is the most interesting and challenging work: Most often there are skills in the field of electronic and IT required, the installations have to work without any interrupts while displayed in an exhibition even though most of them are prototypes.

By supporting the students during my time as an assistant at the FHNW I got a lot of those challenges and I could gather some experience.

At present I am using my practical knowledge to support bigger and smaller names in the art scene and for my own works.
